Writing the perfect subject line for your email can be hard. After all, if your audience doesn’t read it, they’ll never buy.
And we can’t be having that.
Here are 3 steps you can take today to start writing better emails.
Follow the 4 U’s
Mark Ford, a marketing legend came up with a powerful formula. One that you should use for not just email subject lines. But every aspect of your marketing copy
Before you hit send, ask yourself.
Does it create a sense of urgency?
If your reader doesn’t feel like they are missing out, there’s no reason to look now.
For example: “Make an extra $5,000 in sales this quarter.” Sounds a lot better than “Make an extra $5,000 in sales.”
Is your headline unique?
If they can read it anywhere else, they can buy it anywhere else.
For example: “Why New Skeet Monks have healthier dogs.” Rather than, “Save 10% on raw dog food.

Is it Ultra-Specific?
“Fly for less” won’t cut it. Ask your audience to “Book a trip today for the lowest price of the year.”
Is this Useful?
Or even is this relevant. Make sure your subject line matters to your reader.
“Back to school for Fido – 10% off all training supplies.” Sending that headline to everyone who’s recently signed up for training classes, will have a great open rate.
The U’s Point System
While you should always think about all of these “U’s” when writing, you won’t always be able to get them all.
By using a point system you can get pretty close. Review your headline and rank every U from 1-4 points.
If the final score is over 12, you’re good to go!
Test Your Subject Lines
A/B testing can give you a lot of insight for what your audience likes and doesn’t. Simply put A/B testing is sending two slightly different versions of the same headline.
Example:
Training classes are 20% off for back to school.
vs.
Back to school lessons for <dog name>- now 20% off
One of those two will preform better. From there you can learn how your audience reacts and adjust your subject lines to match the same format.
You can also try some online headline testers for instant feedback like MonsterInsights.
Make Sure It’s Relevant
If the subject line and the body of your email don’t match, they definatly won’t mix. The point of a headline is to entice readers to want more.
When you have a deceptive subject line, it’s like opening socks on your 5th birthday.
And let’s face it, would you trust someone who sends you an email that you think is about the best deal on your favorite brand but then says “ go like my facebook page”. Eww
But you can follow me there if you like. No strings atttached.
Sometimes pro copywriters will pull the subject line right out of the email. That way they know it matches.
Conclusion
With these 3 steps you can be sure your subject lines will be better than most. And in a world where we see over a billion ads every day, standing out is the best way to email.
