How to Define Success: A Fresh Perspective for Business Owners

When we talk about success, failure is often seen as its opposite. Many of us are conditioned to believe that if we’re not achieving our goals quickly or smoothly, we must be failing. However, the journey to growth and success is far from black and white.

The Opposite of Success: It’s Not What You Think

To breakthrough this binary thought process of what is success and what is failure, you first need to shift your mindset.

What is Failure?

Failure, in its simplest definition, means a lack of success or the inability to meet a desired outcome. But in business, this definition is often too simplistic. For instance, imagine a dog turning its nose up at a new flavor of treat. Does that make the treat a failure? Nope! It simply means you’ve gained valuable insights, data, and maybe even new ideas for improvement.

How To Define Failure In Business

True failure, in my view, isn’t about unmet expectations or results that fall short of our hopes. Instead, failure is about giving up altogether or, worse, not trying at all. Pursuing a goal—especially in business—takes resilience, and setbacks are inevitable.

There’s a crucial difference between giving up because something feels too hard and choosing to pivot or walk away because you recognize a new, more aligned path.

Walking away when it’s strategically the right decision can be wise and powerful. It means you’re adjusting based on insights and experience, rather than giving up because it’s hard.

Success is the Commitment to Move Forward

Success is not about constant, rapid progress or perfection. It’s about steady movement forward. Even if that movement feels slow or gets interrupted by challenges. The fact that you’re still moving, adjusting, and learning signifies success. As long as you continue pushing past comfort zones, learning from outcomes, and adapting as necessary, you are succeeding.

In business, the path to growth is often a winding one. If you feel stuck or frustrated, redefining success can be the mindset shift needed to reignite motivation.

The Journey Matters Just as Much as the Destination

Remember, success is as much about the journey as it is about the destination. Each step forward—even the missteps—add to your growth. Embrace them all, and you’ll find that success becomes a measure of your determination, adaptability, and courage.
